The Lord Hills Column stands next to Shropshire's Councils Shirehall west of Shrewsbury town centre. The column is the world's largest Doric column in the world at 133ft and 6inches tall (49.83 metres) that's 13 feet higher than Nelson Column. It is also two feet wider than Nelson's Column. It was built to commemorate the First Viscount Lord Hill (1772 to 1832). It was built between the years of 1814 and 1816 and it cost 5,972 pounds, 13 shillings and 2 pence at the time. It is now listed by English Heritage as a Grade 2 listed structure.
On 27 December 1814 on the festival of St. John the Evangelis the first stone was laid by the Salopian Lodge of Free Masons with the last stone being laid on the 18th June 1816 (the anniversary of the Battle Of Waterloo). Originally the column stood at the centre of the roundabout, but now the roundabout is set aside from the column.
